Celebrating Deaf Latinx Culture Through a Collaborative Community Mural at CSD

The California School for the Deaf (CSD) welcomed a new symbol of pride and identity on its campus. A community-collaborative mural took shape outside the Gym, facing the High School Activity Center. Sponsored by the Parodi Charitable Trust and led by Raza de Sordx officers, this mural celebrates Deaf Latinx culture and provides a platform for students to share their stories and heritage.


Bringing Deaf Latinx Voices to the Forefront


Raza de Sordx is dedicated to creating spaces where Deaf Latinx students can express their experiences and celebrate their culture. The mural project is a direct reflection of this commitment. It serves as a visual narrative that connects Deaf Latinx history with the broader CSD community, including students, teachers, parents, alumni, and staff.


The mural’s location is significant. Positioned opposite the wall featuring the APIC mural, it occupies a prominent 20 by 20 feet space, with an additional 12 by 5 feet side panel for artist attributions. This placement ensures that the mural will be a daily reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring Latinx Deaf culture and identity.


Aligning with CSD’s Vision


The mural supports CSD’s vision for its graduates: to develop knowledge, skills, and self-esteem that lead to fulfilling lives and careers. By highlighting Deaf Latinx culture, the mural encourages students to embrace a positive Deaf identity. This confidence and pride are essential for leadership, discipline, and productivity, qualities that help students become active, contributing members of society.


The Artist and Project Details

Cristal Duenas, a Deaf Mexican female artist, has been commissioned to lead the mural’s creation. Her unique perspective and cultural background brings authenticity and depth to the artwork.


The mural took about 4 to 6 months to complete, requiring roughly 240 hours of work.

Raza de Sordx officers and community members gathered to collaborate on the mural. This inclusive approach invited participation from the entire CSD community, fostering a sense of ownership and connection.


Building Community Through Art

This mural is more than just a painting; it is a community effort that brings people together. Students, teachers, parents, and alumni will have opportunities to contribute ideas and even help with the painting process. This collaboration strengthens bonds within the Deaf community and highlights the rich cultural heritage of Deaf Latinx individuals.


By sharing the mural’s story and progress, Raza de Sordx hopes to inspire pride and awareness among all CSD students. The mural will stand as a lasting tribute to the resilience, history, and identity of Deaf Latinx culture.
