How Sand Timers Help ECE Students Learn Patience and Transitions
A small sand timer can do a lot in an early childhood classroom. It gives young children something they can see, understand, and trust. When the sand is falling, time is passing. When the sand is gone, it is time for the next step.
On behalf of our ECE students and staff, we want to share our sincere gratitude to Parodi Charitable Trust for the generous support that helped us purchase sand timers for our department. These simple tools have quickly become part of our daily routines, and they are making a meaningful difference for students in classrooms, shared spaces, and on the playground.
Because of this support, we now have sand timers available in every classroom, as well as outside during recess. That means students can practice patience, sharing, transitions, and time management throughout the day in ways that feel clear and age-appropriate.

Sand timers make time visible for young learners
Time can be hard for young children to understand. Phrases like “five more minutes” or “almost time” can feel unclear. A sand timer turns that idea into something concrete.
Students can watch the sand move from the top to the bottom. They do not need to read a clock or understand numbers to know that time is passing. This helps make routines less surprising and gives children a visual way to prepare for what comes next.
In our ECE classrooms, teachers use sand timers at many points during the day. They may help students know how long they have for an activity, how much time is left before cleanup, or when it will be someone else’s turn. The timer becomes a calm, shared reference point.
Instead of relying only on adult reminders, students can look at the timer and begin to understand the routine for themselves. That is a powerful step toward independence.

A meaningful gift for student growth
We have added Parodi stickers to the timers in recognition of this meaningful contribution to our students’ learning and development. Each time staff and students use these timers, they are using a resource made possible through generosity and care for our school community.
The impact is practical and daily. These timers are not stored away for special occasions. They are used several times throughout the day, in many different settings, by many different students. They support real learning in real moments.
For young children, growth often happens through repeated practice. Waiting for a turn. Watching the timer. Getting ready for a transition. Trying again tomorrow. These small routines help children develop skills they will continue to use as they grow.
To Parodi, thank you for investing in our students. Your support has helped us create more opportunities for children to learn, practice, and thrive. We are truly grateful for your generosity and for the meaningful difference it makes in our ECE community.
